Trading Cards

The phenomenon of collection trading cards began in 1887 with baseball cards. Billions of baseball cards are in circulation today. Some are valued at just a few cents while others are worth thousands of dollars. There are over eight million trading cards for sale in the United States alone. The craze of collection trading cards spans across all generations. People collect trading cards for sports teams, cartoons, rock and roll bands, and anything else you can imagine. For youth the most popular trading cards are Yugioh and Pokemon. For adults the most popular are baseball and football.

While many collect them to trade and as a hobby, there are those who collect them in the hopes their collection will one day with worth a lot of money. And for some, that becomes a reality. There are specific cards out there today selling for top dollar. When John Elway of the Denver Broncos retired, his rookie trading cards were selling for thousands of dollars.

There are several good books on the market listing the value of a particular card or set of trading cards. These books serve as a guide for both buyers and sellers out there. You can also use many online sites to determine the buying

and selling price of such items.

What makes a trade card valuable? A variety of things. First is the availability of the card. Next is the status of the person on the card. It can be as simple as being one of the first cards made. The first baseball cards were made out of a cloth like material. When the substance of the cards making changed, those cards increased in value. There are cards out there that have errors on them, and they can be very valuable. Many errors occurred because the trade card industry experimented so much trying to make the process easier and more profitable. Trading cards from the 80’s and 90’s were purchased cheap. Many of them are of future hall of fame inductees. Once inducted to the hall of fame, such cards tremendously increase in value.

Thinking of trade cards makes me think of all the ones popular now in little league sports. All of my kids have their own trading cards from football. They often trade them with their friends. I guess I better hold on to the ones the get. Maybe someday in the future on of these little leaguers will make it big in sports. Then I can find out how much my rare little league trade card is worth on the market!
