Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

The first know robot was a mechanical bird, engineered in 350 BC. The idea of Artificial intelligence, know as AI, dates back to Greek Mythology. Many people lump and robotics into the same category. There are several differences that make them separate entities. Robots are programmed to give you specific performances. They are predictable and their behavior is pleasant. You can give a robot the same task to do over and over again, and you will always get exactly the same result. AI displays interesting and intelligent behaviors. It also fails as humans do. However, robotics played a large role in the research used to create AI.

The quest to make AI stems from the technological point of view that robots are programmed. They know exactly what they were meant to know and nothing else. This limits the usefulness of robots. To be more useful, human quality including interacting with others, and cooperation are needed. Thus, the development of AI. Robots continue to be useful and serve a purpose, but the limitations of such a design resulted in technology leaving them behind. It is believed

robots will continue to be used in addition to AI in the future.

For many, robots are safer. They do exactly what they should do. You don’t have to worry about errors or changes in the routine. Many fear just what AI will be able to do. While it will be programmed to a degree, the hope is to program it to be able to process information and learn from it. Exactly what the end level of learning for AI will be is yet to be determined. Will AI have a conscious?

The controversy over advances to AI will continue as technological advances continue in the field. AI is not all bad; it has been useful in businesses, medical fields, and in outer space. However, a large portion of society being AI to be a threat as well as crossing an ethical line. The main concern is their unpredictability because they will have the same type of brain function as humans, and we all know some of the dangers that lie in that! Robots will continue to be a reliable product, doing exactly what they are programmed to do. With so much focus on AI, it does not appear there will be much change in store for robots in the future.
