Welcome to the embryology information website
Embryology refers to the study of an embryo and the growth and development process that commences after an egg is fertilized, or after two gametes, one male and one female, come together. After this fertilization happens, cells immediately begin to divide and the organism begins to grow.
When people think of embryos, they automatically think of the human fetus. It is important to understand that embryology not only has to do with humans, but with ever other organism out there. It is strictly related to the growth and development process of an organism after the first spark of life commences.
Are you wondering how to become an embryologist, or one that studies embryology? Well most people who get into it have a basic curiosity for the process of life. They are fascinated by what happens when an organism is first formed and starts to grow. Life has to start from something. In embryology, this subject is studied and analyzed. It is of particular interest how an organism grows.
To give a human as an example, an embryologist is only concerned with the growing fetus before birth. So, if an embryologist is interested in studying birds, they will be most concerned with what happens inside an egg before the bird hatches. Some people who study embryology are only focused on one type of organism and others take a more general approach.
If you want to study embryology, it is important to have a basic understanding of biology. If you know in high school that this is what you want to do, taking biology and anatomy are two very important classes. In college, you will need to take all the required, generalized classes. But, you can also branch out and take more specific classes related to embryology later in their course work. Most people who want to study embryology move on to get at least a masters. But getting a doctorate is a good idea if you want to reach the higher stage of the career and have more opportunities open up. Embryology is something that is fascinating and you don’t even need to be a scientist to enjoy studying about it. The information is out there for anyone to grab.
