Gene Mapping
By CY
Gene mapping is the process of identifying the positions of a genes on a chromosome, and the distance between them. Also called the Human Genome Project, this process is used to identify the unique blueprint of an individuals genes. This will allow us to understand how genetic factors contribute to the spread of human diseases. It will also allow further exploration into the genetic mutations that lead to diabetes, cancer, asthma, and mental illness.

The ultimate goal of gene mapping is to allow genes to be cloned, and then replace the mutated genes that create genetic problems. This can be done by analyzing the DNA sequence and protein. It is believed such cloning will be able to significantly reduce the

effects of cystic fibrosis, which is the most commonly inherited lethal disease in the United States.

There are two types of gene mapping. Linkage analysis determines the position between two genes on a chromosome, analyzing their relationship. Physical mapping involves using all the techniques and information to determine the absolute position of a gene on a chromosome.

Gene mapping holds the hope of distinctly identifying the protein patterns of every single gene. With over 90,000 genes per person, it is a task that has a very long road ahead. However, the possibility of being able to clone genes and eliminate so many genetic disorders is well worth the ongoing efforts.
