Neuroscience

Neuroscience involves many areas including the development, structure, function, chemistry, pharmacology, clinical assessments and pathology of the nervous system. It has become recognized as one of the most interesting areas of science. Neuroscience researchers study and analyze everything from genes to behaviors. Their research in this area has lead to the understanding of how the human brain works, determine how the nervous system operates, and find ways to prevent and cure neurological damage It is a field of science that integrates biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, psychology, and behavior with the areas of human emotions and cognitive functions.

Each person has 100 billion neurons to control the nervous system. These neurons, along with molecules create a network that operates the nervous system. This allows us to see, hear, learn, and breathe. It also controls our personal behaviors.

Neuroscientists generally work in a specific area because the spectrum it covers is too broad. Neuroanatomists study the structure and organization of the nervous system. They study specific neurons and identify their characteristics and functions. Developmental neuroscientists study the growth of the brain as well as changes to the brain. They define the chemicals and processes that take place. They use this information to help people recover from neurological injuries.

Behavioral and cognitive neuroscientists study the functions of perception, learning, and memory. They often use brain scans called magnetic resonance imaging, known as MRI, to identify the parts of the brain that are active during a given activity.

Neuroscientists are combining their knowledge with computer technology to further explore the complexity of the brain. This area of research is growing at an astonishing rate. This field hopes to someday find cures for ailments including strokes, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease.
