Welcome to
Acid Rain
Acid rain is the collection of rain droplets that contain pollutants such as oxide from sulfur and nitrogen. This combination creates acid in the droplets of water. Acid rain has chemical sour taste. The main sources of these pollutants are vehicles and industrial and power-generating plants. The more plants and vehicles in the area, the higher the chance of acid rain. It also depends on the climate of that particular area. Prevailing winds blow the compounds that cause both wet and dry acid deposition across state and national borders, and sometimes over hundreds of miles. Acid rain occurs when these gases react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form various acidic compounds. Sunlight increases the rate of most of these reactions.
Eastern Canada has a huge problem with acid rain because the water and the soil there lack alkalinity and can’t neutralize the acid naturally. Over half of the land in Canada is made up of hard rock that is the result of not having the ability to neutralized acid rain. The acid rain continues to accumulate because the area has no natural ability to cleanse itself.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency is working hard to achieve sufficient environmental health benefits for everyone. They are lobbying to reduce the emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Both of those are the leads types of pollutants found in acid rain. Realistically, the cost of doing this is unbelievable. The cost is too big for the government or businesses to digest. There are some minor changes that can be made including cleaning out smoke stacks and exhaust pipes. Conserving energy and using alternative energy sources is another way to reduce acid rain. Nuclear power, wind power, and solar energy are just a few of those alternate energy sources. On a personal level, turn down the thermostat, car poll, comply with emissions regulations, and keep yourself informed.
