How to Clean a Water Cooler

Having a water cooler is very convenient and a great way to remind us to drink plenty of water each day. It is very important to know how to properly clean a water cooler. This will help prevent the spread of germs or the growth of bacteria. The build up of dirt and mold is also a huge issue to be concerned with.

Many individuals think a water cooler is clean because the water is in a large container that can’t be touched by germs or hands. It is very possible for dirt, bacteria, mold, and germs to build up. This is why you need to schedule a regular cleaning schedule for the water cooler. This should be done at least once every six weeks. You will want to do it more often if there are many individuals accessing the water cooler.

You will want to clean the water cooler using water mixed with one tablespoon of bleach for every gallon of water. For safety, make sure you unplug the water cooler before you begin cleaning. Start by cleaning the interior portion of the water cooler. This is where the water bottle is inserted. Many people choose

to clean this portion each time they change the water bottle. Allow the water solution to run through the spigot for at least two minutes. Make sure you thoroughly rinse the system with warm tap water to remove all traces of the bleach.

The tray underneath the spigots should be removable. Wash it thoroughly in the bleach water solution. Wipe off the entire outside area of the water cooler to remove any dirt and germs that may be accumulating. To help keep your water cooler clean, wash your hands before using it. Never place your hands or containers directly on the spigots as anything on them will be transferred to the spigot. It can then be transferred to the next containers that come into contact with it.

Having a water cooler is a very convenient way of getting the water you need. It is very important to clean the entire water cooler at least every six weeks. Failure to do so will result in germs, bacteria, dirt, and mold contaminating the water you are drinking. Keep the water cool schedule handy so that it doesn’t get forgotten.
